Isaac Katalayi plays the drums and animation (African Rap) at the same time. The phenomenon is
known as “Atakalu”, the all-powerful dance music of Congo has hit another creative peak
by injecting animation vigor and vibrancy into each song and dance. The singing shouter, who is also called the animateur,
characterizes many singers of the rural music traditions in the Congo.
He leads each specific choreography by enthusiastically shouting coded instructions as to how to perform dance steps of the
songs. Each body part is engaged in succession, as if to give other parts a chance to rest and converting ethnic village dances
into massive parties that go on and on for the entire night.
